Save Money with Garage Sale Treasures

When you absolutely have to have furniture for your home, but don’t have the cash to pay for it upfront, and don’t want to go into debt to purchase it, you do still have options available. One of the best ways to find discount furniture for your home is by checking out local garage sales. You may not think so, but you can find some really great furniture items at great prices in this way. Typically people who have garage sales need extra cash, or are just trying to weed out some of the clutter that they have, so they are willing to let go of furniture that they no longer use for low prices, just to get it out of their way, and bring in some extra money. This is where you come in. It may take some time to find furniture in this way, but it will be time well spent.

You may think that all you will find at a garage sale is junk, but that really is not the case. Oftentimes, when you clean up the piece, remove the dust and debris that has accumulated over the years, you may be surprised to find a great piece of furniture underneath. So, if your interest has been peaked thus far, keep reading.

The first thing you need to learn how to do when shopping at garage sales is how to get past first appearances. Keep in mind that the furniture you may find for sale may have been stored in an attic, basement, or garage, and if the owner didn’t bother to clean it up, it may look pretty rough at first glance. Dust and cobwebs can easily be cleared away, and stains that you find can easily be covered up with a throw or slipcover, as long as there is no structural damage. As long as the quality is good, you can easily fix the aesthetics with a little bit of work. It will be well worth the time you spent when you realize how much money you can save, and how beautiful the end product may turn out.

Be more on the lookout for durability and sound construction, rather than minor scratches and dents. If you are looking at a table, chair, or anything that has legs, you should really pay attention to the sturdiness of it, as this is where most problems with the piece will be found.

If you do find minor damages, try to decide whether or not they can easily be repaired by you. Loose or broken hinges, screws, handles, and even some wobbles can be taken care of with some time and TLC, so no big deal. If the furniture you are looking at is a piece that is made of solid wood, and the wood appears damaged, you may want to move on. Likewise, if the piece that you are looking at needs more in repairs than it is worth, then you will need to really think about whether or not you should purchase it, especially if you are unable to do the repairs yourself.

Learn how to use your negotiation skills. Remember that people who have garage sales are typically just interested in getting rid of the items they have, and making some sort of profit, so they usually are willing to haggle somewhat over the price. Use that to your advantage!
